White Mustard Seed
Latin Name : Semen Sinapis Albae
Chinese Name : 芥子
White mustard seed is most commonly used to treat conditions associated with the lungs. It is said to warm the lungs, regulate Qi and expel phlegm. This makes it well suited for treating symptoms such as a cough which is caused by phlegm and chest distention.
White mustard contains mustardine, mustard enzymes, fat, protein, and mucus. The white mustard is hydrolysed by mustard enzymes to produce p-hydroxybenzyl isothiocyanate (white mustard oil), acidic sulphate, and glucose. Acidic sulphate can produce sinapic acid and choline by alkaline hydrolysis.
